DESCRIPTION:Published on: 11:40 pm\, April 15\, 2017 by: mattersindia.com \nTrupti Jain \nSingapore: An Indian environmental engineer has won this year?s prestigious ?Cartier Women?s Initiative Awards? in Singapore for providing women working on farms with water management solutions and protecting small farmers against droughts and flash floods. \nTrupti Jain\, 46\, was one among the six winners chosen for the Asia-Pacific laureate from a pool of nearly 1\,900 applicants from over 120 countries and were selected by an independent international jury. \nEach recipient receives a USD 100\,000 prize money as well as a year of mentoring. Jain\, an Indian government employee for two decades in the rural development\, has worked for women farmers whose work frequently go unrecognised. ?I didn?t expect it\, but I am so proud of what my team has achieved and I am happy I was so determined to reach my goal\,? Jain said. ?I hope to use the prize money to scale up the business as well as create a certification programme for women\, so their skills and indigenous knowledge will be recognised\,? she was quoted as saying by ?The Straits Times?. \nJain started Naireeta Services in 2013\, providing handmade water management solutions that enable small farmers to filter and store rainwater underground to protect them against droughts and flash floods. Her Gujarat-based company has already implemented 232 systems in India\, directly benefiting 18\,000 small farmers and indirectly helping more than 100\,000 of the rural poor. \nJain was presented the award on Wednesday at a function held at the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall in Singapore. DESCRIPTION:Published on: 6:00 pm\, April 13\, 2017 by: mattersindia.com \n \nFr Puthuva distributing leaflets \nKochi: A parish in Kerala is encouraging the public to stay off internet and cellphone on Good Friday and recapture family and interpersonal relations. \n„For the past two years\, we have observed cyber bandh (shut down) on Good Friday\,” says Father John Puthuva\, pastor of St George Church\, Thalayolaparambu\, a parish under the Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese. The parishioners also keep away from cyber world for one hour on Sundays and half an hour each on other days. \nThe parishioners have distributed leaflets among the public highlighting dangers from over indulgence in modern technological facilities. They encouraged people to maintain cyber continence. \nFather Puthuva\, known for initiating socially relevant projects and movements\, said they aim through this initiative to strengthen family and interpersonal relationships that have been marred by the overuse of phones\, internet and social networking sites. ?Even family members have very little time to talk to each other\,? the priest bemoaned. \n„Today families have lost the thread of mutual love\, respect and trust. The debility in family relationships has orphaned old parents and children\,” Father Puthuva explained. The priest also pointed out that the cyber world encourages children to create their own inside their homes that leads to mental disorders in them. \nAccording to the priest\, the cyber world lays trap for people irrespective of age\, religion and gender across the globe. \nOver indulgence in cyber world has led to cover-eating\, melancholy\, sleeplessness\, anxiety\, violent behavior weakness\, unwanted fat\, headaches\, and loss of concentration\, Father Puthuva said in a press release. \nOther fallouts from the cyber misuse are excessive interest in sex among its users and lack of interest in studies among students. \nSocial networks such as Facebook\, Whatsapp and Twitter have prompted people to seek sexual relationship outside marriage. Around 40 divorce cases are caused by use of Facebook\, the priest claimed. \nThe cyber bandh\, he added\, will educate people about the „devious role of cyber age.”

DESCRIPTION:Published on: 1:22 pm\, March 8\, 2017 by: mattersindia.com \n  \nSr Sudha Varghese \nBy Jose Kavi \n  \nNew Delhi: Vanitha (woman)\, the largest circulated magazine in India\, has selected a Catholic nun for its prestigious Woman of the Year Award. \n  \nThe fortnightly magazine published in various Indian languages announced the annual award on March 7\, the eve of the International Women?s Day. \n  \nThe magazine\, a publication of the Malayala Manorama newspaper group\, said it chose Sister Sudha Varghese\, for the 100\,000-rupee award in recognition of her meritorious service among the lowest among the Dalit groups in Bihar\, eastern India. \n  \nThe 68-year-old nun\, who insists to be addressed only as Sudha\, is a member of the Sisters of Notre Dame congregation based at Patna\, capital of Bihar state. She has focused on educating Musahar people\, especially girls\, for the past three decades. \n  \nSister Suddha left her teaching job to work full time for the socioeconomic advancement of Musahar (literally rat eaters)\, who lived like slaves under the oppressive caste system. The nun?s work has helped end child marriage prevalent among them and check their exploitation by higher caste people\, the magazine says. \n \nShe founded ?Nari Gunjan? (Women?s Voice) as an umbrella organization in 1987 to coordinate her multilayered activities such as education\, advocacy and welfare schemes. Her organization coordinates 1\,020 Self Help Groups for Musahar women in Patna and Saran districts. Each group\, comprising 10 to 15 members\, educates its members about their rights and helps them become financially self-reliant through thrift societies. \n  \nShe has so far helped some 2\,250 girls to graduate from high school or skill training centers. \n \nSr Sudha with Musahar women \nSudha?s work among the low caste women\, braving threats even to her life\, has won her several awards. In 2006\, the Indian government presented her Padma Shree (lotus honored)\, the fourth highest civilian award in the country. \n  \nThe same year\, she was chosen for the Social Lifetime Achievement Award from Godfrey Philipps and the Ideal Village Award from the Bihar government in 2008. She became the Pride of Bihar in 2009. Four years later\, she received the Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad Award for Education in Bihar. She won the Icon of Bihar Award in 2016. \n  \nThe Bihar government appointed her vice chairperson of the state Minority Commission in 2012 for three years. She represented Bihar at National Commission for Protection of Child Rights and coordinated a two-year study on ?violence of Dalit women? in 2005. She is a member of the National Dalit Human Rights Campaign since 1998\, the Bihar unit People?s Union for Civil Liberties and National Alliance of Women. \n  \nVanitha\, which awards people in various fields\, had average qualifying sales of 687\,915 copies in December 2013\, according to India?s Audit Bureau of Circulations.

DESCRIPTION:Press Information Bureau\, Government of India\, Cabinet \n08-February-2017 20:10 IST \n  \nThe Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved 'Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan’ (PMGDISHA) to make 6 crore rural households digitally literate. The outlay for this project is Rs.2\,351.38 crore to usher in digital literacy in rural India by March\,.2019. This is in line with the announcement made by Finance Minister in the Union Budget 2016-17. \nPMGDISHA is expected to be one of the largest digital literacy programmes in the world. Under the scheme\, 25 lakh candidates will be trained in the FY 2016-17; 275 lakh in the FY 2017-18; and 300 lakh in the FY 2018-19. To ensure equitable geographical reach\, each of the 250\,000 Gram Panchayats would be expected to register an average of 200-300 candidates. \nDigitally literate persons would be able to operate computers/digital access devices (like tablets\, smart phones\, etc.)\, send and receive emails\, browse internet\, access Government Services\, search for information\, undertaking cashless transactions\, etc. and hence use IT to actively participate in the process of nation building. \nThe implementation of the Scheme would be carried out under the overall supervision of Ministry of Electronics and IT in active collaboration with States/UTs through their designated State Implementing Agencies\, District e-Governance Society (DeGS)\, etc. \nBackground: \nAs per the 71st NSSO Survey on Education 2014\, only 6% of rural households have a computer. This highlights that more than 15 crore rural households (@ 94% of 16.85 crore households) do not have computers and a significant number of these households are likely to be digitally illiterate. The PMGDISHA being initiated under Digital India Programme would cover 6 crore households in rural areas to make them digitally literate. This would empower the citizens by providing them access to information\, knowledge and skills for operating computers / digital access devices. \nAs the thrust of the Government is on cashless transactions through mobile phones\, the course content would also have emphasis on Digital Wallets\, Mobile Banking\, Unified Payments Interface (UPI)\, Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) and Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS)\, etc. \n*****

(Reuters) \nThe World Bank has decelerated India?s growth for 2016-17 fiscal to a ?still robust? 7% from its previous estimate of 7.6 due to demonetisation\, but asserted that the country would regain momentum in the following years with 7.6 and 7.8% growth. \n?The immediate withdrawal of a large volume of currency in circulation and subsequent replacement with new notes announced by the government in November contributed to slowing growth in 2016\,? the World Bank said in its latest report. \nIn its first report after November?s demonetisation\, the World Bank said\, ?Indian growth is estimated to have decelerated to a still robust 7% (in fiscal 2017 ending on March 31\, 2017)\, with continued tailwinds from low oil prices and solid agricultural output partly offset by challenges associated with the withdrawal of a large volume of currency in circulation and subsequent replacement with new notes.? \nNotably\, India maintains the distinction of being the fastest growing emerging market economies of the world\, bypassing China.  \n?India is expected to regain its momentum\, with growth rising to 7.6% in fiscal year(FY) 2018 and strengthening to 7.8% in FY 2019-20\,? the Bank said\, adding that various reform initiatives are expected to unlock domestic supply bottlenecks and raise productivity. \nInfrastructure spending should improve the business climate and attract investment in the near-term\, it added. \n?The ?Make in India? campaign may support India?s manufacturing sector\, backed by domestic demand and further regulatory reforms. Moderate inflation and a civil service pay hike should support real incomes and consumption\, assisted by bumper harvests after favourable monsoon rains\,? the Bank said in its latest report Global Economic Prospects. \n?A benefit of ?demonetisation? in the medium-term may be liquidity expansion in the banking system\, helping to lower lending rates and lift economic activity\,? the World Bank noted. \nNoting that in India\, cash accounts for more than 80% of the number of transactions\, the World Bank observed that in the short-term\, ?demonetisation? could continue to disrupt business and household economic activities\, weighing on growth. \n?Further\, the challenges encountered in phasing out large currency notes and replacing them with new ones may pose risks to the pace of other economic reforms (e.g. Goods and Services Tax\, labour\, and land reforms)\,? it said. \n?Spillovers from India to Nepal and Bhutan\, through trade and remittances channels\, could also negatively impact growth to these neighbouring smaller economies\,? the Bank noted. \nAccording to the Bank\, India?s growth in the first half of FY 2017 was underpinned by robust private and public consumption\, which offset slowing fixed investment\, subdued industrial activity and lethargic exports. \nConsumption was supported by lower energy costs\, public sector salary and pension increases\, and favourable monsoon rains\, which boosted urban and rural incomes\, it said adding that economic activity also benefited from a pickup in foreign direct investment (FDI) and an increase in public infrastructure spending. \n?Unexpected ?demonetisation??the phasing out of large-denomination currency notes which were subsequently replaced with new ones?weighed on growth in the third quarter of FY2017\,? the World Bank said. \nWeak industrial production and manufacturing and services purchasing managers? indexes (PMI)\, further suggest a set back to activity in the fourth quarter of FY2017\, it added. \n?For the whole of FY2017\, growth is expected to decelerate to a still robust 7.0 %.? \nIn its report\, the Bank said there has been slowdown in investment in South Asia. \n?In India\, gross fixed capital formation has been on a downward trend since 2011\, with a shift in the composition from private to public\,? it said. While public investment rose by 21 % in FY2016\, private investment (which accounts for two-thirds of the total) contracted by 1.4 %\, reducing overall investment growth to four %. \nInfrastructure demand is expected to go up to $1 trillion under the 12th Five-Year Plan (2012-2017). \n?Going forward\, public and private investment should be supported by higher allocations in the FY2017 federal government budget to build and upgrade infrastructure\, and the setup of a $3 billion National Investment and Infrastructure Fund\,? it said. According to the Bank\, India?s steep private investment slowdown has been attributed to several factors. The need to unwind excess capacity built during the pre-financial crisis growth boom amid weak external demand (eg in the manufacturing sector) has discouraged new projects and caused investors to shelve existing projects\, it said. \n?Second\, policy uncertainty has been a factor\,? it said. \nFor example\, the stalled Land Acquisition Bill has extended project development timelines. \nLack of federal and state government coordination\, on compensation for land acquisition and environmental clearances\, has contributed to cost and time overruns. \nAlso lenders have been less willing to finance overleveraged corporates\, especially in infrastructure related sectors (eg power and other utilities\, steel\, and cement firms). \nIn particular\, the Reserve Bank of India?s 2015 corporate governance reforms in state-owned banks (which represent two-thirds of the total banking sector lending) has adversely affected lending to leveraged corporates and conglomerates\, the report said.

DESCRIPTION:Published on: 5:44 am\, January 14\, 2017 by: mattersindia.com \n  \nAhmedabad: A 14-year-old boy in Gujarat has signed an agreement worth 50 million rupees to explore the possibility of commercial production of a drone created by him which can help in detecting and defusing landmines in war fields. \n \n  \nHarshwardhan Zala\, who is studying in Class 10\, started work on the prototype of the landmine-detecting drone last year after reading in newspapers about high army casualties due to landmines. \n  \n?I first created a land mine detecting robot but realised that since the weight is heavy it would trigger a blast and damage it so I thought of creating a drone which will be at a safe distance while detecting the mines\,? said Harshwardhan\, who signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the recently-concluding Vibrant Gujarat summit in Ahmedabad. \n  \nThe state government had even part financed his final prototype which cost him around Rs. 500\,000. Now the government experts will explore the possibility of its commercial production. \n  \n?An MoU has been signed with him and in the coming days Gujarat government will work with him on this project\,? said Dr Narottam Sahu\, head of Gujarat Council on Science and Technology (GUJCOST). \n  \nExplaining the concept\, Harshwardhan said that once the mine was detected by the drone through an infrared sensor\, a 50 gram detonator will complete the task of defusing it. \n  \nSo how much does his drone cost. ?For the final prototype that I created it cost me around Rs. 320\,000 and improving it further may increase the cost a little but it will be still cheaper than the present system which are used in army\,? the 14-year-old claimed. \n  \nHarshwardhan\, whose father is an accountant\, has set up his own company ? Iran looks good. \nStrong showing from Africa: Tanzania\, Ghana\, Kenya\, Rwanda.” \nThe group however slashed India’s economic growth forecast from 7.3 percent to 6.5 percent in 2016-17 because of cash shortage from „botched implementation of demonetisation”. \nIt however\, said that India remains fastest growing large economy in world as growth will accelerate after liquidity shortage eases and public investment ramps up.

Rani Laxmi Bai\, Tatya Tope\, Mangal Pandey\, Veer Kunwar Singh and many all. \nThey all started the movement against British. But unfortunate we have not unity in our country and our freedom fighters\, some of the people from our country are playing this battle from the British side\, due to this reason our freedom fighters got failed and our country did not freedom that time. Our many freedom fighters are got caught and many are hanged by British and many got died in war and movement.  \nAfter the 1857 movement\, in 1942 a movement named „Bharat Choro” was started by our national father Mahatma Gandhi. After a long Journey\, India became freedom in 1947. This freedom has a great value for our nation\, for our countrymen and women. Now in 1947 we have an own country\, not „sone ki chiriya” but it was totally own a free country where anyone can live according to their selves.  \n \nOur country India is a great sign of unity\, here all the religion live together\, either they are Hindu\, Muslim\, Sikh\, issue or any other caste\, they all are the brother. So there is a great unity in diversity in our country India.  \nPatriot for my country will never down\, it will increase day by day. And I can not stop loving our country. My country is best and it is my motherland. \nSo brothers and sisters after a huge struggle our country get freedom\, many people gave their life\, gave their present for our future. The performance featured traditional Indian dances to showcase the universality of Christianity through the youth?s energy. \n  \nIt was blissful to see members from the Indian Delegation at World Youth Day 2016 representing DoCat present a dance performance yesterday evening during the Youth Festival Program at St. Mary Magdalene Square\, Krakow. \n  \nThe performance centered on a regional song depicting unity in the midst of diversity\, performed by young people from various parts of India. Various regional dance steps were included into a fusion style that represented the diverse cultural heritage of the country. \n  \nThe audience seemed enthusiastic and overwhelmed to have an Indian performance before them and enjoyed every bit of the performance\, dancing and clapping along with the performers. The performance strongly reflected Christian unity and the communion of people of God in joyous celebration of the mercy of the Lord\, especially in this extraordinary year of mercy. \n  \nJoseph K.
